Rhinestone Shapes And Cuts When youre admiring your rhinestone jewelry, or considering the purchase of a new piece, its good to know something about rhinestone shapes and cuts. Rhinestones are the most popular stone used in costume jewelry. Whether a foil-backed rhinestone, a Swarovski crystal rhinestone, or an acrylic plastic stone, they all come in a variety of shapes and cuts.
The Rhine river in Austria lent its name to the pieces of crystal or glass that were found in and near it. Rhinestones were originally cut an finished by hand, until the 1800s when Daniel Swarovski created a glass-cutting machine that cut facets into the glass, and produced a crystal far superior to hand cut stones.
The main shapes of rhinestone that you are likely to find in vintage and contemporary costume jewelry are:
Round: Round rhinestones come in a huge variety of colors clear crystal the traditional diamond look-alike, and clear transparent colors, often named after the gem that they imitate, such as Emerald, Sapphire and Amethyst. Round rhinestones have pointed backs with a foil coating similar to the back of your mirror. This enhances the reflection and sparkle of the stone. They are typically cut with eight facets on the table (the sides of the stone next to the flat top). Collectors like to use the term chaton for round rhinestones.
Navette or Marquise rhinestones are oval, and pointed at both ends. Also available in many colors and sizes, they can have flat or pointed backs. They also can be either fat or thin depending on the setting and the desired look.
The shape of Rectangular rhinestones is called a cushion cut, since the corners are cut and the stone resembles a cushion, or pillow. The square or rectangular shaped rhinestone is also known as Octagon, Cushion Octagon and Emerald cut. Emerald gem stones have fragile corners and edges, so the corners are cut to prevent chipping. The simplest cut for a square or rectangular stone is the table cut, which has a flat table and four sides, with no additional facets.
Oval shaped rhinestones, or cabochons, with either flat or pointed backs, were used by many vintage jewelry designers. They come in a vast array of colors, and may look like opal, turquoise, jade, or solid color gem stones. Cabochons have rounded tops with no facets.
Pear Shaped rhinestones, also called tear drop can have pointed or flat backs, and can have a small or large number of facets. Pear shaped stones are particularly beautiful when set into a pendant necklace.
Sometimes multiple names and definitions were used in vintage jewelry catalogs for the various shapes and cuts of rhinestones.
